Crash_US31&RailRoad9-23-19_1A crash on US 31 near 13th Road sent a Summit Argo, IL man to the hospital with serious injuries this afternoon.

Crash_US31&Railroad9-23-19_2This afternoon, around 3:38 p.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Ben Ennis responded to a crash between a semi and a passenger car in the northbound lanes of US 31 near 13th Road.

Crash_US31&RailRoad9-23-19_3Preliminary investigation by Trooper Ennis indicates that a red 2014 Freightliner tanker truck driven by Renee Wise, 57 of Wakarusa, IN was stopped in the right lane of US 31 at the railroad crossing for a train. A black 2012 Toyota Camry driven by Jaime Martinez, 40 of Summit Argo, IL did not stop and ran into the rear of the semi. Martinez allegedly became distracted by some papers that fell just prior to the crash. Both northbound lanes were blocked as a result of the crash.

Crash_US31&Railroad9-23-19_4Martinez sustained serious injuries but they are not believed to be life-threatening. Martinez was transported to the Plymouth Airport and then flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN.

Both northbound lanes of US 31 reopened at approximately 5:05 p.m.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be factors in this crash.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
