PSW_GLSS6-8-19Great Lakes Super Sprints main event certainly didn’t disappoint and the undercard also provided close racing for the fans. It was a buckeye sweep for the GLSS with all three sprint drivers on the podium hailing from Ohio.

Phil Gressman from Helena piloted the 7C to the win with Rawson, Ohio’s Ricky Peterson finishing second and Max Stambaugh, Elida Ohio crossing the line in third.

Gressman’s 7C started the feature from the sixth spot after picking up a heat win and then the redraw.

The actual starting spots were jumbled up at the start when a couple early attempts at getting started sent some of the front runners to the back of the pack. One of those who started in the back was Plymouth’s own Zane Devault. Devault took the first two green flags on the front row only to loop it in the second turn on the slick dry track on the second attempt to start the event and had to start shot gun on the field.

With 24 winged sprints racing two wide and slide jobs being the order of the day, once the green flag flew it ran non-stop to the checkers and traffic was everywhere on the track.

Several former and current CSR sprint regulars took the opportunity to run the GLSS event. Lakeville’s Garrett Saunders had a rough heat but was able to get the car to the feature via the B main to finish 13th the highest of the local racers. Warsaw’s Micheal Summers was close behind Saunders in 14th with Goshen’s Tyler Fitzpatrick in 15th. CSR regular Eli Lakin piloted his 360 sprint car to 16th.

Plymouth’s Jeff Devault, father to Zane Devault, just missed making the A main with a sixth finish in the B. Granger’s Andrew Cockman took advantage of the opportunity to get some additional seat time in the sprint car, moving up from 600’s this year. Lakeville’s Eric Saunders was shaking down a new 360 sprint car missing the feature.

Garrett Saunders and Summers shared the hard charger award both improved 9 spots from their starting position.

The front runners where in lapped traffic within laps of getting started and the first couple cars ran most of the race with brake rotors glowing from the delicate balance of being on the throttle and checking up for traffic.

These same GLSS drivers are scheduled to return Sept. 21 in the Fall Wing Fling SOD vs GLSS show. Mark you calendar as this event will bring two groups of winged sprint cars and both winged and non-winged 600s to do battle in the crisp fall air.

Saturday night also featured an UMP modified event that would be the main event at most tracks. Some of modified’s top drivers battled for the win. Matt Mitchell and Derek Losh started on the front row for the feature with Garrett Jameson and Frank Marshall lined up behind. With the two top points leaders lined-up nose to tail at the front on the outside when the green flag flew they were on the gas on the cushion racing hard. Jeffery Erickson Jr. in the 1E started in the 8th spot made his presents known quickly moving up and racing door to door with Bobby Stremme, Dylan Woodling and Mitchell finishing in the third spot.

Again with only one yellow at about the midway point the lap traffic was an issue for the leaders. With laps winding down Losh had a comfortable lead over Marshall when he came upon several lapped cars. Not sure of his lead on Marshall, Losh split a couple lapped cars coming to the checkers in a highlight reel move that made sure Marshall would finish behind him.

Losh maintains a 33 point lead over Frank Marshall with Zeke McKenzie 110 back. UMP modifieds return Saturday for another points race June 15.

The non-winged 600s had two features Saturday, the first was a make-up event from the week before. While the top three finishers looked the same for the two events, they were two different events.

The first was the first event of the evening under the sun with the regular scheduled feature was the final event under the lights.

Dylan Woodling started on the pole of the first race with Ed Cleveland on his heels quickly from the start. Jacob Ruppe started in the 2nd spot with Chad Hartzell in the third spot, with Cleveland getting up to second Ruppe and Hartzell battled each other for the final spot on the podium. With only a handful of laps remaining Ruppe left a spot low on the back stretch for Hartzell. Hartzell got by to finish the event in third.

Garrett Goodwin finished in fifth from a 16th starting spot. Tyler Chalk would be the big mover of the race improving 11 spots from a 20 starting spot and finishing 9th.

The evening feature finished in the same order as the first but the start was greatly different. Woodling started in 11th picking up the win and the hard charger improving 10 spots. Ed Cleveland started forth got the lead over Chad Hartzell who started on the pole by moving up to the cushion earlier than Hartzell. Cleveland was racing hard with Hall early in the event when they tangled and Hall spun having to go to the rear. The high side of the track was proving to be the fast way around the track. Hall moved out to the cushion and beyond to make his way back from the tail up to the ninth spot.

Cleveland had lead the bulk of the laps when on the white flag lap in turn four Woodling stuck his machine under Cleveland for the spot, they touched wheels Cleveland had to catch himself as he bicycled up on two wheels coming to the checkers. Woodling with the second checkers of the evening and the podium being a carbon copy of the first.

Woodling leads in feature wins with 3 but Cleveland leads the important points with Hartzell only eleven points behind in this still early part of the season.

The Thunder Stocks had an exciting race as the only full fender cars on the schedule, and they put them to good use. Eventual feature winner Austen Hubbard started on the pole after picking up a heat win early in the evening from the second spot. His stat line will show he only passed one car all night but Hubbard was busier than most with hard charging Bryan Banta back from an early season accident and returning to the Thunder Stocks. Banta also picked up the heat win earlier from a 7th starting spot  would start third in the feature. Shane Sanders started along side Hubbard and made it hard for Banta and Lee Hall to get by.

Hubbard drove his own race putting his car where it needed to be on the track. Banta tried his hardest to move Hubbard off that line to no avail finishing in a hard fought second with Hall following him across the stripe at the end. Jacob Kolwyck just missed a spot on the podium in fourth from a ninth spot finish.

Lee Hall leads the points race over Shane Sanders and RJ Akers with Wade Clemmons, Clint Hall and Austen Hubbard the next three all very close.

Thunder Stocks, UMP Mods will be in action again Saturday, June 15 along with CSR Sprints and the very competitive Super Streets.

Fan appreciation night Saturday June 22 will feature UMP Mods, Super Street, Non-Wing 600s and CSR Sprints. Fans will be able to get their favorite drivers autograph and picture. The Indiana Dirt Karting series returns Sunday June 23 for an exciting two day race schedule.
