Huppert named Academic All American

ADA — Ohio Northern senior middle hitter Chelsea Huppert (Bremen) was named First Team Academic All-America in volleyball for 2019 in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

She becomes only the second player in ONU history to be named First Team Academic All-America and the first since Liz Schnelle in 2009.

Huppert is the only Polar Bear volleyball player to be named Academic All-America two years in a row after earning Second-team honors as a junior in 2018.

In all, seven student/athletes have earned eight Academic All-America honors in the program’s history.

Huppert was named First Team All-America earlier this year, is a three-time First Team All-Great Lakes Region honoree and is a three-time First-Team Academic All-District honoree.

She is also a four-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference award winner, earning First-team accolades each of the past three seasons.

This season, Huppert finished second in the OAC with a .339 hitting percentage and was third with 356 kills and a 1.01 bps average.

Huppert is third all-time in ONU history with a career .338 hitting pct. and 125 career block solos, is fourth with 401 total blocks and is sixth with 1,380 kills.

The No. 10-ranked Polar Bears finished the 2019 season with a 27-6 overall record under the retiring 29th-year head coach Kate Witte.

Ohio Northern won the OAC Regular Season title with an 8-1 league mark and won the OAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed.

ONU then advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a victory over Aurora (Ill.)
