CulverSignCulver Town Clerk, Karen Heim released the following information on Friday afternoon:  As you are aware, there is a winter storm heading our way. In preparation for the storm, here are some things to keep in mind.

Weather Forecast from Marshall County Emergency Management:

Here is the most recent information from the National Weather Service:

  • Winter Storm Watch issued from this evening through Saturday evening.
  • 4-7 inches of snow is forecast with locally higher amounts possible
  • Strong northeasterly winds with gusts from 25-35 mph will lead to blowing and drifting issues which include reduced visibility, slick roads, and roads drifting closed.
  • Extreme cold temperatures Saturday and Sunday night with wind chill -15 degrees F to -10 degrees F.

Locally:

  • An “Advisory” level travel advisory is still in place
  • Red Cross is prepared to pre-establish a shelter if local officials determine that would be beneficial.

Plowing:

Our crews will work throughout the weekend to keep the roads clear. There are a few things you can do to help them out. First, if you normally park your car on the road, find another safe spot off the road to park. This will allow our plows to clear the roads quickly and effectively and save you from having to dig your car out from a bunch of heavy snow in single digit temperatures. The town will declare a snow emergency when three inches of snow has fallen or when conditions jeopardize the flow of traffic (blowing and drifting snow). We will alert the town via Facebook and Town, Gown, and Lake as well as via the media. When this happens, vehicles along the snow routes must be removed or they may be towed away at the owner’s expense.

The following streets are considered snow routes:

Academy Road from Slate Street to town limits by Culver Academies

College Avenue from Slate Street to Lake Shore Drive

Jefferson Street from Main Street to State Road 17

Lake Shore Drive from Slate Street to State Road 10

Main Street from Chadwick Shore to Lake Shore Drive

Mill Street from Main Street to State Road 17

Ohio Street from Davis to Lake Shore Drive

School Street from Lake Shore Drive to State Road 10 and 17

Slate Street from Mill Street to Academy Road

Second, please be patient. The crews will work to keep the snow routes clear first and then work on secondary streets. Once all of those are stable and clear, and the storm has passed, they will begin working on alleys.

Third, when you are shoveling, snow blowing, or plowing out your sidewalks, driveways, or parking lots, please don’t place that snow back into the street.

Shelter:

The temperatures will be dropping throughout the weekend. If you find that you or someone you know needs a place to warm up, you can contact the police at 574.842.2525 or you may come to Town Hall, 200 East Washington Street. Enter via the police station and use to the phone on the wall to contact the officer on duty.
