The Superintendent of Plymouth Schools, Andy Hartley, explained to the Plymouth Lions Club why your vote is needed on the PCSC Special Election Referendum on the primary ballot May 7. Student Safety and Mental Health were two important items addressed. Support staff and teacher salaries in Plymouth Community Schools need to be competitive with nearby schools and local employment opportunities. Walkerton, Bourbon, and Warsaw offer higher teacher salaries and benefits.
In addition, a full-time social worker is needed at each school to ensure students have the social and emotional support needed and to help teachers work through problems students are dealing with. This proactive type of security initiative is proven to prevent future problems, especially in the formative years.
Plymouth Community schools are some of the best in Indiana. Our communities are the preferred choice for relocating families, primarily because of the quality of our schools. Unfortunately, the Indiana general assembly has adjusted the budget in a way that has hurt high performing schools like ours.
If we are to maintain our status as a school district that performs at a level of excellence, we must have the funds necessary to support our students, maintain acceptable class sizes and remain competitive.
The referendum will not appear in the General Municipal Election this Fall. The only opportunity voters will have to vote in favor of or against the imposed property tax increase will be the May 7th election.
A check in the amount of $1000 was accepted by Linda Yoder of the Marshall County Community Foundation. All funds raised from this transaction will be used to purchase a new Refractor which is needed for our Operation Kidsight Program.
In other business, a White Cane Day is scheduled at Walmart on May 11th. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who donates to help- someone have a better life.
In addition, one new member sill be inducted at the next regularly scheduled meeting in May.
