Rockies compete at Al Smith Invite

MISHAWAKA — The Plymouth Rockie Wrestlers competed at the Al Smith Smith Invitational over the weekend. The two-day event was the 42nd Annual that hosts a total of 32 teams. It is comparable to the IHSAA State tournament finals held at the end of the year because elite teams from around the state participate in the event.
Indianapolis Cathedral won their third consecutive tournament at Mishawaka on Saturday. They scored 270 points. They were followed by Crown Point, Perry Meridian, Mishawaka, and Penn. The Rockies finished 28th overall scoring 57.5 points over the two days.
Rockie Graham Calhoun won the championship match at 170 lbs. He is the first Rockie to win a weight class at this event. Graham won five matches on the way to his championship. He pinned his first two opponents from Fort Wayne Snider and Crown Point. He then decisioned his next opponent from Elkhart Memorial 14-3. He pinned his next opponent from Chesterton in the semi-final match. His Chesterton opponent was 20-0 going into the match. In the championship final, he won by decision over his Bloomington South opponent 9-1. Graham is now 26-0 on the year.
Dominic Smith wrestling at 126 lbs was the only other Rockie to place as he finished 7th overall. He defeated wrestlers from Northwood, Merrillville, and Elkhart Central. He is now 24-4 on the year.
The Rockies travel to East Noble on Saturday for their next event. The JV matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
