Lions Club Mike BoysFormer owner and editor of the Pilot News, Mike Boys, informed the club about an upcoming visit of the Traveling Vietnam Wall to Plymouth.  Honor…Respect…Remember, three words that signify the wall.  This Traveling Memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War.  It was made for the purpose of helping heal and rekindle friendships and to allow people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their home town who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to Washington D.C.

The local American Legion is sponsoring the visit and Mike Boys is the chair for this event.  He explained that the wall is 360 ft long and contains 58,307 names. It is scheduled to arrive on September 11th and the wall will be able to view by 8am the next day.  The Veterans motorcycle Brigade will be escorting the wall to Plymouth, and it will stand in River Park Square.  Special ceremonies will continue thru Saturday with various dignitaries scheduled for each evening.  A complete list of events for the week will be published soon.

Five members of the Plymouth Lions Club traveled to Indianapolis as volunteers to take and sell tickets at the Indiana State fair.  This is just another opportunity for service. As Lions, we serve.

Operation Kidsight is underway for another year.  This is an Indiana Lions program to prevent early problems from Amblopia (lazy eye) which if not corrected before the child’s eye is fully developed may never be completely corrected without surgery.  The age will vary, but six is considered the outside age when the eye is considered fully developed.  If found early enough Amblopia may be corrected with eyeglasses.  There is no charge for the screening program and the Lions will provide a child with glasses if the parents cannot afford the cost of glasses.

The Lions club also approved a request to purchase dictionaries for this year’s distribution.  Area third graders will each be given a pocket dictionary.

The upcoming Blueberry Festival is the club’s biggest fundraiser and the Lions club will once again be serving Blueberry pancakes and sausage, as well as Polish Sausage sandwiches for the Holiday weekend.

In the words of our new International President, Dr. Jung-Yul Choi “Good is Everywhere, each of our 1.4 million members is different.  These very differences are what make us strong.  They make us great. They make us Lions.”  As Lions, we serve!  If you or anyone you know would like to join the Plymouth Lions Club, please contact any Lions Club member.
