Senator Donato: Bill to Address the Detection of Underground Utility Lines Passes Committee

February 16, 2020

Senator DonatoA bill sponsored by State Senator Stacey Donato (R-Logansport) that would address the detection of underground utility lines unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Utilities Thursday.

House Bill 1218 would amend the state’s current “Call Before You Dig” law to require utility operators who bury their service to use materials capable of being detected from above ground.

“In 2003, the Indiana General Assembly passed the ‘Call Before You Dig’ law as a means to promote personal safety and to reduce damages done to underground utility lines,” Donato said. “As utility operators begin to replace aging lines, the state wants to make certain that all new lines are detectable to prevent any future damage.”

HB 1218 will now be considered by the full Senate.
