County News # 1Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel presented a new contract with Quality Correctional Care to the County Commissioners during their meeting on Monday morning.  The sheriff reminded the commissioners that this is the company that provided medical services to inmates who are housed in the county jail.

With the increased jail population and recently having a disabled inmate in the facility the sheriff had to increase the hours the nurse was on duty.

The 2019 contract called for services Monday through Friday from 8 to 4.  The sheriff extended her hours which caused him to pay an additional cost on the side.  Hassel told the commissioners it will be cheaper to extend the hours of services than paying the overtime.

The Sheriff asked for an increase of 12 hour days, Monday through Friday and 5 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. He told the commissioners his 2020 budget should cover the additional cost as long as they don’t experience any huge medical issues. Hassel said, “There’s one big benefit of the 12 hours Monday thru Friday is the nurse, personally will do the medication disbursement.  My staff would not have to do that. That’s kind of a liability thing.”

The Marshall County Commissioners unanimously approved the contact for 2020 as presented pending review of the contract by County Attorney Jim Clevenger.
