Friday evening shortly after 9:00 P.M. Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Smith responded to a single vehicle accident with injury in the 600 block of 14 B in Etna Green near the Marshall-Kosciusko County line.
As Deputies arrived on the scene the news release stated that a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado being driven by 68 year old Gene Burkett of Pierceton, Indiana had been traveling eastbound on 14B.
It also stated that at some point for unknown reason Mr. Burkett’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree and burst into flames while the driver was pinned in the vehicle.
Marshall County Coroner, John Grolich was notified at 9:30 P.M. that Mr. Burkett had be pronounced deceased at the scene.
An autopsy was performed Sunday, December 20th which confirmed the driver as being Gene Burkett. It was also determined that Mr. Burkett had experience a medical emergency prior to the crash.
Assisting the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department were First Responders from Tippecanoe and Bourbon Fire Department, Lutheran EMS, Marshall County Coroner John Grolich, Marshall Coroner’s Office Investigator Ward Byers and Reichert & Knepp Towing Service.
This accident still remains under investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
