NIPSCO_logoAs we continue recovering from this public health emergency, many Hoosiers are reporting more scams related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

NIPSCO customers in our area in particular are receiving a rising number of scam calls demanding they pay a certain amount of money or else their services will be disconnected. NIPSCO is not making these calls. Under Gov. Eric Holcomb’s executive order utility disconnects are prohibited until Aug. 14, 2020.

If you think you are being contacted by a scammer, hang up the phone, or delete the email or text immediately. Then, call your utility provider using the number on your bill. Your provider will look at your account and can tell you the correct information. NIPSCO’s customer care team can be reached at 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726).

If you believe you have been the victim of a coronavirus-related scam, contact law enforcement immediately. You may also file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division online here by clicking “File a Complaint.”

Additionally, if you are struggling to cover your utility costs due to a loss of income over the last several months, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program can help residents qualify for a one-time, $350 benefit for utility costs. This includes those who have already received financial assistance related to the pandemic. Applications will be accepted through July 31. This program will not cover all your energy and does not excuse individuals of obligations to pay utility bills.
