U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) introduced a bipartisan resolution marking November 2020 as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. The third annual resolution was first introduced in 2018 in memory of Indy Star reporter and columnist Matthew Tully who lost his battle to stomach cancer that year. Yesterday, the resolution, cosponsored by Senators Mike Braun (R-Ind.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), passed the Senate unanimously.
Stomach cancer is the fifth most common type of cancer worldwide and one of the most difficult to detect in its early stages. The resolution expresses support for more education of patients and health care providers and more research into early diagnosis, screening, and treatment.
“In a year where so much of our health care conversation has revolved around the current pandemic, it’s also important to continue to raise awareness about diseases that have afflicted Americans for decades,” said Senator Young. “It is my hope that our third annual resolution will bring awareness to stomach cancer so that we can detect and treat this disease sooner and save more lives.”
