County Drainage Board Approves Variance for J&J Quality Meats in Bourbon

J&J Quality Meats Jan2021Members of the Marshall County Drainage Board meeting Tuesday morning and re-organized for the new year and made annual appointments to various boards.  Commissioner Kevin Overmyer will remain as President and Stan Klotz will be Vice-President.  Other members of the board include Commissioner Mike Burroughs and Citizen Board members Randy Glingle and Dave Stults.   The County Surveyor Craig Cultice also serves on the board and Barb Neidlinger is the secretary.

In 2017 the drainage board granted a variance to Jordan Shupp of J & J Quality Meats to build a building within 67 feet of the Lemler-Burger Ditch on 12B Road.  On Tuesday Shupp was back before the Drainage Board to seek an additional variance for a proposed addition to the current building.  He was seeking relief of the 75 foot setback from the ditch, and hoping for the same setback he received for the current building.

While the drainage board was in favor of the variance, it was pointed out that a 14 x 60 concrete freezer was placed in the setback without a variance.  Shupp said it is a temporary solution to need for additional freezer space. He said the freezer could be moved but he has no plans at this time to relocate it.

The County Surveyor also pointed out that while the building addition will not meet the 4,000 square foot space requiring a drainage plan, the company did include a small basin to catch water before it goes into the ditch.

The Marshall County Drainage Board approved the variance request at 67 feet from the top of the ditch bank.
