05/18/12 Nationwide, severe weather-related problems (storms, wind, fallen tree limbs) are the top cause of power outages. In preparation for storm season, NIPSCO is rolling out new technologies to improve customer communication and field crew response time. “Restoring power as quickly and safely as possible is our top priority, and we constantly look for new approaches to improve service,” said NIPSCO Chief Operating Office Mike Finissi. “Some of our recent projects are focused on increasing communication, both internally between our dispatch center and field crews as well as with our customers.” Expanding Customer Communication Tools NIPSCO is utilizing two new channels to enhance existing communications activities around power outages – mobile web and social media. “Customers are increasingly going online for timely information,” added Finissi. “Our mobile site and Twitter page give customers convenient ways to find information whenever they need it.” Earlier this year, the NIPSCO mobile site went live, designed to give customers access to outage, safety and account information whenever and wherever they are. With the added power outage tracking and reporting feature, our electric customers can quickly inform us of an outage and view the latest restoration updates. In other matters, the board considered bids for construction of space to house the School of Inquiry at Plymouth High School. The New Tech High School will begin with the start of the 2012-2013 school year and occupy space in existing areas of PHS. The first year, the enrollment has been limited to 100 students, but that number is expected to increase by 100 students each year until they reach a maximum of 400 students.
05/17/12 A stroke happens fast, and when one occurs, every second counts. That’s why Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center continues to invest in state-of-the-art technology to ensure that the community has access to the most advanced stroke care in the country. As the first hospital in the region with a Primary Stroke Unit certified by the Joint Commission, our Code Stroke emergency activation system is in place to ensure that patients who exhibit signs of a stroke, receive the fastest possible treatment. Now, through a new partnership between Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and Loyola University Medical Center, SJRMC will continue to lead the charge in stroke care by developing the first stroke telemedicine program in Northern Indiana. Telemedicine at SJRMC enables local neurologists to get a second opinion from stroke specialists at Loyola, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, when decisions about treatment options are most critical. “This ability to activate a world class stroke team—in a matter of seconds—provides prompt access to cutting edge stroke care to patients who are candidates for more specialized testing or treatment,” said Dr. Paula Toth-Russell, a board certified neurologist with South Bend Neurology and SJRMC physician.
