LaPaz Dollar General Employee Helps Police Locate Shoplifter

  11/07/13  On Sunday, November 3rd at 5:30 p.m. the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department received a report from the LaPaz Dollar General Store that advised a female had stolen items from the store and left in a 4-door, Pontiac heading northbound on U.S. 31.  The employee was able to obtain a license plate from the suspect’s vehicle.  Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Les McFarland responded to the Dollar General store and began his investigation.  The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department made contact with South Bend Police and notified them of the theft and the description of the suspect’s vehicle in attempt to locate it.

Deputy McFarland had been on his was way to St. Joseph County Jail to pick up a prisoner that was being held for Marshall County. While en route to St. Joseph County, the officer was advised that South Bend Police had made a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle in the area of Indiana Avenue west of Michigan Road so he responded to that scene.

Arriving there Deputy McFarland made contact with 18 year old Ashley Scroggins of South Bend who was arrested for theft. The driver of the vehicle, Jamie Winston was arrested by the South Bend Police for driving while suspended with a prior offense and was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.  Deputy McFarland continued on to the St. Joseph County Jail and picked up 42 year old Phillip L. Endicott of Walkerton who was wanted on an active felony warrant for failure to appear with no bond.  Both subjects were transported to the Marshall County Jail where Ashley Scroggins was held on a $1,505 bond.  She was released on November 5th after posting bond and received a Superior Court I date of November 26th to appear for her initial hearing.
