07/19/11 The Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, Indiana, is once again partnering with the Bike Barn, 103 E. Lake Shore Drive, this time to present a tour-by-bicycle of the east shore of Lake Maxinkuckee, on Saturday, July 23, at 9:30 a.m.
The tour, to be led by Jeff Kenney of the Society, will begin at the Bike Barn and travel along the east shore, stopping outside several historic cottages to share information about the history of the people and properties of some of the Culver area’s most historically significant figures.
Among the stops will be the home on which the best-selling book in America in 1906, “The House of a Thousand Candles,” was based; the home at which Booth Tarkington wrote part of his debut novel, “The Gentleman from Indiana,” the cottage which Cole Porter called home during summers growing up here; the home of the family who built the auto which won the first Indianapolis 500 race. Discussed will also be many other properties of historical, architectural, and cultural significance along the shore.
Riders are encouraged to bring their own bicycles, bring their own helmets, and hydrate fully before the ride, which should last between 60 and 90 minutes and cover around ten miles round trip. Snacks and drinks will be provided at the end of the ride, which is free and open to the public.
