12/26/13 The annual “Boots for the Bus Stop” drive conducted by Corporal Bridget Hite with the help of the Plymouth Police Department received a boost just before the Christmas holiday from The Cellular Connection.
The local Verizon Wireless Company on North Michigan Street just across from Centennial Park donated boots, warm winter hats, gloves and scarves to the program.
Twelve years ago, Officer Hite with the Plymouth Police Department began noticing kids standing at bus stops or walking to school without boots and realized they would have wet shoes the rest of the day. Now 12 years later, the need for donations still exists. Well over 1000 pairs of snow boots have been distributed to area children.
Hite said, “This event consists of collecting slightly used and new boots, hats and gloves for our local school children.” She added, “Today’s tough economic conditions make it difficult for families to make ends meet without help from people in the community.”
Donations are distributed through area school on recommendations from school staff and employees.
Damien, Manager at The Cellular Connection said the business is allowed to donate up to $500 annually to help various local causes. This year employees decided to help the Boots For the Bus Stop program with part of their funds. Employees did the shopping for items donated to Officer Hite a week ago. He said, “It was easy to see the need once we started looking for one.”
Boots, hats, glove and financial donations can be dropped off at the following locations: Plymouth Police Department, Plymouth Park Department, Moose Lodge, and WTCA Radio Station. Officer Hite is also willing to make arrangements to pick up donations if needed. Any monetary donations will be used to purchase items from local stores.
