11/20/13 Vehicles traveling up and down roadways in Indiana and Marshall County are required by law to have license plates. During Monday’s County Commissioner meeting the idea of plating buggies was brought forward.
Commissioner Jack Roose asked Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck if horse and buggies are doing damage to our county roads. Haeck confirmed that the hooves of the horsed and the narrow wheels of the buggies do cause a specific type of damage to our county roadways.
Roose asked the superintendent to gather dollar estimates for maintenance costs and manpower to fix these issues.
It was noted that LaGrange County, Elkhart County and Fulton County all require buggies to purchase an annual plate, similar to a vehicle’s license plate.
Roose said the funds gathered could help pay for maintenance to county roadways.
The Commissioners will talk with officials from other counties during their annual conference and then may discuss the possibility of initiating a buggy plate after the first of the year.
