04/28/11 Neighbors around the Twin Lakes area a wondering what will happen to the Twin Lakes Camp at the intersection of Peach, Pear and 12th Road. Recently Re Max Oak Crest Reality & Auction signs were placed on the property formerly know for many many years at the Kiwanis twin Lakes Camp for Crippled Children. The real estate and personal property will be auctioned off on Wednesday, may 18th beginning at 3 p.m.
The Twin Lakes Camp opened in the summer of 1910 as the “Happy Haven Camp for Crippled Children” with a goal to provide summer camping experiences for handicapped children from the Chicago area. The Pennsylvania Railroad went right by the camp and founder, Florence Pouty Robinson took advantage of the railroad by securing a special railroad car to transport the handicapped children.
Funding was always an issue and in 1993 Mrs. Robinson deeded the property to the South Side Crippled Children’s Ad for one dollar with the following conditions: This property is to be retained and used for the benefit of crippled children. I further direct that no trees on the property be cut down or destroyed except insofar as the same may be dangerous, or unless necessary to make room for new camp buildings and improvements connected therewith.
In 1947 the camp became know as Kiwanis Twin Lakes camp for rippled Children and Kiwanis Clubs from the Chicago area assumed the responsibility of assisting in the necessary fund raising.
Twin Lakes Camp, Inc is offering this property for auction. They have stated that their main group support for this camp ended about 3 years ago. The camp has no been in operation for the last 2 or 3 summers.
