DONNELLY STATEMENT ON UNFAIR CHINESE TRADE PRACTICES

March 14, 2012

03/15/12 Wednesday, Congressman Joe Donnelly released the following statement on the Obama Administration’s decision to take up the case of Chinese restrictions on rare earth metals at the World Trade Organization.

“I am glad that the president talked this afternoon about China’s unfair trade practices. Those unfair practices rig the game to benefit Chinese companies and workers, costing us jobs and economic security. And, as I’ve said time and time again, American workers and businesses deserve a fair fight.

“I think that the administration can and should do more on this front. Several recent reports show that since 2000, the Chinese government’s trade violations have contributed to the loss of more than 400,000 jobs in the U.S. auto supply chain, an industry that employs tens of thousands of Hoosiers. Later this week, I’ll petition the administration to end the Chinese government’s practices that make exports of Chinese auto parts to the U.S. artificially cheap and, as a result, put American auto parts manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage.”
