Walking Bridge Improvements Discussed at Downtown Revitalization Meeting

March 10, 2016

WalkingBridge_1During Wednesday’s meeting of the Downtown Revitalization Committee, Jack Davis, the newest member of the committee asked if there was any activity being looked at for the kayak launch instead of waiting until phase II of River Park Square.

It was reported the Park Department has applied for a LARE grant from the DNR for a riverbank stabilization and restoration design project to include a launch.  Notification of grant awards will be out in July.

Mayor Senter said parts of phase II of River Park Square could be completed as funds are available.

WalkingBridge_2Committee member George Schricker asked about the status of the footbridge.   He wondered if there were any grants available to help with a refurbishing project.  Schricker said, “Now you can see the bridge.  It stands out not that the homes are gone.”

Randy Danielson reminded committee member that the foot bridge is the oldest walking suspension bridge in the state.  He suggested announcing a renovation project on the bridge sometime this year during the state’s bicentennial.

Making repairs and improvements to the Walking Bridge on East LaPorte Street was moved to the top of the priority list for the Downtown Revitalization Committee.
