10/31/12 The Plymouth High School Theatre Department will be presenting their annual children’s program on the first weekend in November. This year’s selection, Doctor Dolittle, will be double-casted in order to give the approximately 120 students an opportunity to be involved.
Children’s plays have been a part of the PHS offering since 1979.
Students participating are enrolled in advanced acting, stage crew, and theatre arts classes. There are 30 students in the crews who work behind the scenes and build sets.
Teachers Charlotte Tyree and Jane Faulstich team-teach the advanced acting classes and Faulstich teaches the advanced crew class as well as the two beginning theatre classes.
Tyree believes the productions will help students succeed in the future. Tyree said, “Miss Faulstich and I certainly think that anytime students can perform in front of a group, they gain self confidence that can be useful for anything in their futures.” She added, “For more creative students, this is also a wonderful opportunity to grow as a performer.” “Most of the high school students involved in productions do not go on to college to perform, although some do. However, everyone can gain knowledge that can be used in a variety of later experiences.” Tyree said.
Tyree continues to be supportive of the entire fine art program at PHS. She said, “I certainly think that having opportunities for students to work with fine arts is vital. I would like for all students to be exposed to the arts-visual, music, theatre, dance, etc. as well as have programs where students who have more of an interest have an opportunity to cultivate their interests.”
Tickets prices for the productions are $3.00 for children 12 and under and $4.00 for all others. According to Tyree, the ticket sales are used to cover the cost of putting on a show. She said, “Most people don’t’ realize we have to purchase scripts, pay royalties, buy lumber and supplies to build our sets, buy specialty costume and make-up items, etc.” She explained that any proceeds that would be remaining after paying the bills for a production would be placed in an account to be used to support theatre programs and upcoming productions. The department also presents a scholarship to a student at the end of each school year.

Friday, November 2 at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m.
Performances will be at the Plymouth High School auditorium
Doors open 30 minutes before each show for festival seating.
