4 Fire Department Respond to Barn Fire

October 18, 2011

10/19/11 Monday afternoon about 3 p.m. firefighters from four departments responded to a barn fire on 5B Road.

The 9-1-1 call to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was for a barn on fire with a man inside trying to get items out of the barn.  Before firefighters from the Bremen Fire Department arrived on the scene a second barn on the property started on fire.  According to Bremen Fire Chief Jerry Lanning embers from the first barn fire ignited the roof of the larger older barn on the property.  When he arrived on the scene a subject was on the roof of the big, older barn trying to put the fire out.

Within a few minutes of arriving at 6150 5B Road, the property owned by John Heckaman, according to the County’s GIS.  Bremen called for assistance from Bourbon and LaPaz Fire Departments.  The high winds and dry conditions allowed the blaze to spread quickly and Bremen requested a full response from the Plymouth Fire Department too.

The initial barn was a total loss while the larger barn only sustained minor damage to the roof.

Chief Lanning said open burning near the barn was the cause of the blaze.
