12/13/13 A long time leader of the Plymouth community – Fred Morrow – has passed away at the age of 90.
A lifelong resident of Plymouth Fred founded Morrow Insurance Agency but was best known as one of the shapers of the Plymouth Community through his tireless work in city government and charity. He was a city Councilman from 1970 to 1987 and worked for decades on behalf of the aviation board of Plymouth and the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.
He served the Plymouth Industrial Development Corporation and many more civic and charitable organizations and was instrumental in the vision that became Plymouth’s outstanding public park system.
Then Governor of Indiana Evan Bayh awarded Morrow the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1995 and in 2000 Plymouth High School inducted him into their Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.
“I had a lot of fun with Fred over the years,” said Max Schuh of his fellow councilman. “I always liked his laugh. He was the kind of guy that laughed from his feet up. I really enjoyed my time with him on the Council. We had some good times and some bad times but he was always fun to be around.”
“I always had a great amount of respect for Fred. I always looked at him as a pillar of the community,” said Mike Delp current member of the Plymouth Common Council. “He really cared about the community and was always giving back. He along with several others really had the foresight to do things that were going to make Plymouth a better community. He’s certainly one of the people who made Plymouth the great place to live that it is today.”
“I owe him a lot because without he and Chuck Glaub and later John Oliver ‘Bill Nixon Field’ never would have happened,” said former Plymouth Athletic Director and Baseball Coach Bill Nixon. “He was always one of my favorite people from the time I was a little boy and the only person in my adult life I allowed to call me ‘Billy’. He had the rare ability to see both sides of everything and that is a rare and special trait.”
Born on June 17 of 1923, Fred lettered in basketball and track while at PHS and was a member of Plymouth’s sectional basketball championship teams in 1940 and 1941 and was the 1941 team’s leading scorer. During World War II he served in the Army/Air Force and reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and earned his wings flying B-17’s, B-25’s and B-29’s.
Morrow passed away on Dec. 7 he is survived by his wife of 64 years Shirley, two sons – Dr. Doug and David Morrow – and his daughter Susie Kreighbaum.
Services will be at 3 p.m on Sunday Dec. 15 at First United Methodist Church of Plymouth. The Sigma Chi White Rose Ceremony will follow the service. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 1 p.m to 3 p.m on Sunday preceding the service.
Memorials may be given to the Marshall County Community Foundation First United Methodist Church Endowment or to the Plymouth High School Athletic Department.
