06/04/13 First grade students from Washington Discovery Academy created three new Geocaching sites in Centennial Park as part of their Project Based Learning (PBL) this school year.
During Monday’s Park Board meeting two students and teacher Lauren Cooper discussed the project and explained what they did and how Geocaching works. They then presented four portable GPS systems to Park Superintendent Mike Hite. The portable GPS systems can be borrowed from the park office and used to search for the various Geo surprises hidden in the park. Cooper said they wrote and were award a grant to purchase the portable GPS units that they donated to the park.
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. After signing into the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it.
