Capek_HayfieldandStorm (2)Charles shares the following about his work: “Even beyond the elemental beauty and luminosity I find in a subject, I strive to capture mood and character in my work. I find this easiest to do by working en plein air, or on site. I feel extremely fortunate that my own “home country,” and indeed much of the upper Midwest, is an area of such varied geographic and societal features and moods—one can be immersed in landscapes of great solitude as well as intimacy, observe people whose lifestyles range from the pre-industrial to the ultra-technological, and find the structural legacies of master-class stonemasons, carpenters, bricklayers, and others who spent their lives building things. I could spend a lifetime painting the region’s many faces and still never be done. I can say with profound gratitude what so many artists express: that the results are well worth the effort, and I find great joy in my work.”

Capek_MaresTailsHis mixed media works are combinations of pen-and-ink and watercolor, rendered in that order on hot-press watercolor paper. Once the ink sketch is complete and dry, that sketch is overlaid with watercolor, sometimes almost straight from the tube. The technique exploits the brilliance of water color while achieving texture and strength.
