05/25/11 Monday night City Attorney Nelson Chipman told members of the Board of Public Works and Safety that specifications were provided to four internet providers but only two companies submitted proposals to the city. The companies are interested in using space on the city’s water towers and or tower at the fire department to place antennas for high-speed internet.
The proposal from FourWay Computer Products included paying the City of Plymouth $50 monthly for space on the tower at the fire department. The proposal also included free WIFI service for the fire department. FourWay was not interested in using the water towers at this time.
D.C. Tech’s proposal included using the two water towers and the tower at the fire house. Although they did not offer any financial payment to the city they did include free internet access to city offices within the service area. That could include the City Building, Street Department, Water and Sanitary Department, and Park Department. They would also provide limited FREE WIFI to the downtown Plymouth area.
The proposals were taken under advisement for review by the City Attorney and Mayor. A review of the various needs for internet access by city department will be done along with the current financial impact. A recommendation to the Board of Public Works and Safety at their next meeting on June 13th and a public hearing will be held in conjunction with the recommendation.
