02/28/14 Last week, Janet Marshall, Washington Discovery Academy teacher, received word her proposal for the Lilly Endowment was granted. Mrs. Marshall will be receiving a $10,000 grant to go to England, Ireland, and Scotland this summer to research her ancestors. Mrs. Marshall’s son Clay, who is a junior, was included in the grant. While there, they will be visiting an underground mining museum, photographing cemeteries and headstones, and digging into birth, death, and marriage records. Not to mention soaking up the historical landscape.
Upon returning, Mrs. Marshall and her son will write four electronic books sharing their experiences. They plan to submit them to BigUniverse so they will be easily available to students. Next school year, Mrs. Marshall will also offer an after school genealogy club to parents, staff, and students where they will have the opportunity to start their own family tree and conduct research on their ancestors. Who knows, maybe some of them will get hooked on genealogy too.
This generous grant is awarded to 100 teacher and administrators statewide. There are usually over 450 applicants. Check out this website to see who else won.
