05/24/12 Members of John Glenn High School FFA recently made good use of the leadership skills their organization is known for by making connections with area farmers, which in turn helped them place third in Indiana with 165 votes for the second annual FFA Chapter Challenge.
FFA members in 12 states took this opportunity to build better relationships with area farmers. Those farmers then voted for their favorite FFA chapter. The John Glenn FFA chapter received $1,500 to National FFA for its achievement.
“This really helps the chapter out as we give away $1,000 in awards at our banquet,” said Tim McLochlin, John Glenn FFA advisor. “This award will allow us to do more, and it gives students more opportunities.”
FFA chapters were in the running for the FFA Chapter Challenge Grand Prize, sponsored by the National FFA and Monsanto. The Lawrence County High School FFA in Moulton, Alabama received the most votes this year and won a trip to the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 24-27, 2012, for six students and one advisor.
The top FFA chapter in each of the 12 states received a $2,500 certificate of credit as first prize, while those ranked second through tenth received between $1,000 and $2,000. Eighty other FFA chapters who didn’t make the top 10 in their respective state also received a $1,000 credit. In total, 201 FFA chapters received certificates of credit which can be used with the national office for items such as new FFA blue jackets and convention fees.
“The mission of FFA goes beyond farming but its heart will always be in creating new generations of leaders who understand agriculture and small communities,” said Linda Arnold, Monsanto customer outreach lead. “Monsanto is proud to partner with the National FFA Foundation to help local chapters create that bond with the people who grow our food and build our communities.”
