10/31/13 Dr. Ron May, President of Ancilla College, was the featured presenter for the Ancilla College Lampen Lecture series Wednesday, October 24th.
Dr. May visited Rome as an invited participant in the 2013 Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) Rome Seminar. The purpose of the seminar is to allow dialogue between American Catholic colleges and universities and the Vatican. Ancilla is one of the smallest Catholic colleges in the ACCU.
“What a privilege to have Ancilla College known on the international scene! Dr. Ron May represented Ancilla well at the Vatican meetings and was able to highlight the uniqueness and the spirit of Ancilla” explained Sister Carleen Wrasman, Coordinator of Mission Integration at Ancilla College.
While in Rome, Dr. May and his wife Joan had an audience with Pope Francis, attended mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, and visited the Vatican museums. They also had a chance to visit the PHJC Motherhouse in Dernbach, Germany and meet with the General Leadership of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. In his presentation he presented a travelogue of his trip through pictures.
Dr. May believes this is probably the trip of his lifetime. He had a chance to share with the Vatican the emphasis on service that characterizes Ancilla College. He also had a chance to better understand the beginnings of PHJCs and the value of staying true to the spirit of the Blessed Mary Catherine Kasper.
The Lampen Lecture Series is free lectures open to the public and is held in Room 231 at Ancilla College. The series was named for Sr. Joel Lampen, the first president of Ancilla College, who opened the doors of Ancilla to the local community.
The Lampen Lecture Series was designed to combine the universality of the Catholic Church, the international character of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, who sponsor Ancilla College, and the Earth Charter to promote thinking beyond one’s own experiences and interests.
The final Lampen Lecture for Fall will take place November 13th at 3 p.m. The topic will be Sister Aloysia Lowenfels, a PHJC Holocaust victim as presented by Sister Christiane Humpert, a German PHJC sister.
