Each month Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter highlights one of the city ordinances so residents know and understand what the city is enforcing. This month Mayor Mark is discussing U-Turns.
Senter Said, “I often see vehicles downtown on Michigan Street going one direction, but the driver wants to park in the angled parking on the opposite side of the street.” The mayor continued, “So what they are doing to complete this mission is making an illegal U-turn as described in Plymouth Ordinance 70.05. Some drivers even stop in the middle of the street awaiting oncoming cars to accomplish this. This is a dangerous situation in that it causes rear-end collisions and changes in the traffic flow along Michigan Street.”
The city ordinance on U-Turns states, It shall be unlawful for the operator of a motor vehicle upon any street or highway within the city limits (including State Road 17) to cross the centerline of said street or highway for any purpose other than to go upon a different street (such as, at an intersection) or an alley or except to enter a driveway (either residential, commercial, or other public way).
The ordinance continues: It shall be unlawful for the operator of a motor vehicle upon any street or highway within the city limits (including State Road 17) to cross the centerline of said street or highway for the purpose of parking the motor vehicle on the opposite side of the street from the original path of travel of said motor vehicle.
