Mayor’s Youth Council State of the MYC Address

February 24, 2015

Monday evening during the Plymouth Common Council meeting, Karly Gruett, President of the Mayor’s Youth Council addressed the packed council chambers, giving the State of the Youth Council address.

She took the opportunity to briefly share past achievements and future ambitions of the organization that is celebrating its fourth year of service to the community.

Gruett highlighted the organizations input into naming River Park Square.  Since the park’s establishment the Mayor’s Youth Council has been active throughout the year participating in activities including the annual Earth Day Clean Up and Christmas Tree Lighting.  She also discussed future plans for the park including an ice skating rink, growth of the Farmers’ Market and Yellow River Festival.  The Council has also envisions a Veteran’s Plaza for the park.

Last year the Youth Council organized the Annual Earth Clean Up Day in April.  Gruett said, “This activity was created to promote environmental appreciation throughout the community.”  Ten different locations were picked as sites to improve with the planting a trees.  Nearly 100 participants came out to support the activity.  The MYC is hoping to get a larger number of youth organizations to help this year.

The Youth Council will also introduce the Adopt-A-Street program during the annual Earth Clean Up Day.  The council has already selected Randolph Street from Berkley Street to Plymouth Goshen Trail as their adopted street.

Last year two members of the MYC participated in the mayor’s committee to select the official logo and branding.  This year they will work to incorporate the new logo into the city’s new entrance signage.
