12/15/10 The Plymouth Common Council heard on first reading an ordinance that will prohibit dogs in Oakhill Cemetery.
The Statement of Intent and Purpose of the ordinance states: Oakhill Cemetery is a scared place. Unfortunately, not all of our fellow citizens know it.
The administration has received more than one complaint that dogs, under the control of owners, are allowed to urinate and defecate on the graves of our friends and relatives. Responsible dog owners would never allow that to happen. But fortunately, it is necessary to adopt ordinances to establish minimum standards, enforceable by fine, when simple etiquette is lacking.
The intent and purpose of this ordinance is to prohibit dogs in Oakhill Cemetery.
The new ordinance will make it unlawful for anyone to have a dog in Oakhill Cemetery at any time under any conditions with the exception for service dogs and police K-9s.
The penalty for violating the ordinance will be a fine of $25 for the first offense and up to $2,500 for subsequent offenses by the same person.
The City Council will hear second reading during their December 27th meeting.
