07/18/11 Drivers can expect to see more police on Indiana roadways in the next few weeks, as various law enforcement agencies across the state increase their impaired driving patrols through the end of the month.
Through high-visibility enforcement activities such as saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints, police hope to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on Indiana roadways this summer.
According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI), July is one of the most deadly months for Hoosier motorists. There were more than 15,000 collisions that occurred on Indiana roadways in the month of July last year.
While Indiana has seen a decrease in the number of alcohol-related crashes over the past five years, nearly 5,000 of the collisions that occurred in 2010 involved an alcohol-impaired driver.
Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that impaired driving crashes occur most often during the warmer months of the year when roadway travel tends to increase.
In Marshall County drivers will see increased patrols by the Marshall County Police Department, Bremen Police Department, Bourbon Police, and Culver Police Department.
