Atkinson, Hopkins win at Plymouth Speedway CRA Super Series season kicks off with lots of action

April 16, 2012

04/17/12 A caution-filled CRA Super Series kicked off at Plymouth Speedway Sunday afternoon.

The first dozen or so laps of the 75-lap Top Speed Fabrication CRA Late Model Sportsman race looked like smooth sailing until caution bred caution for the next several restarts. With about 12 laps to go, the race stayed green until Jason Atkinson took the checkered flag.

“I was really looking forward to coming up here,” Atkinson said from the Victory Lane podium provided by Speedway sponsor, R&B Car Company.

“I’d like to thank all those guys out there behind me and all my sponsors,” Atkinson continued.

Atkinson pulled off the win with less than a second between him and second-place finisher Charlie Hannah.

Following the Late Models race which boasted 20 cars, 25 more drivers took to the asphalt in the CRA Street Stocks series.

After an early crash involving seven cars – four that got pretty banged up which red-flagged the race – action heated up again with Brian Hopkins leading most of the first half. Hopkins lost his lead to Dave Bice, who looked to have the race wrapped up until a late spin that came after the white flag. Bice, Jimmy Kirby and Shawn Amor held the top three spots for the second half of the race but were all three held up at Turn 3, allowing Hopkins, JJ Shafer and Eddie Wolf to take advantage on the final turn and come out in the top 3 spots. Amor finished 11th; Bice 12th and Kirby 13th.

A quick 10-lap feature ended the day’s racing with Sal Bustamante taking the checkers in the Plymouth Speedway Hornet series. Following the young driver was Jamie Henrikson.

The season opener for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts event will take place Sunday, April 22nd at Plymouth Speedway. More information on the CRA Series is available at www.craracing.net. Plymouth Speedway opens its regular Friday night racing season April 27th.
