03/11/14 Plymouth High School Junior Emma Libersky recently won first place at the Indiana Poetry Out Loud competition and will go on to represent Indiana at the national competition in April. This is Emma’s second year competing in Poetry Out Loud, and she is the first participant from Indiana to be a repeat state champion after winning the state competition in 2013. Seventeen other schools were represented in the state competition held at the Indianapolis Central Public Library on February 22.
Libersky is now preparing for the national competition to be held at George Washington University in Washington D.C. on April 29-30. Contestants at the state and national level must memorize and recite three poems in front of a panel of judges while being assessed on their physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, level of (poem) difficulty, evidence of understanding, and overall performance. At the state competition, Libersky recited Robert Frost’s “Mending Wall,” John Keats’ “To Autumn,” and Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “Dirge Without Music.”
