Man Walks for PTSD

November 21, 2011

11/22/11  John McClennan walked along the Lincoln Highway on Friday into Plymouth as a part of his journey from Fostoria, Ohio to Oak Brook, Illinois. But, the walk for McClennan, who turned 60 on November 12, was more than just an exercise to see if he could make it. McClennan has spent the last four and one-half years thinking of how he could help bring awareness for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that thousands of soldiers, including his son Josh, had or continue to experience.

McClennan sought out donations from friends, family and his community in the hopes of raising $20,000 to hand deliver to the Wounded Warrior Project center nearChicago.

McClennan said, “I have watched my son Josh struggle to overcome the effects of three deployments toIraqandAfghanistan.” Josh has been with the Ohio National Guard for over four years.

Josh McClennan has been holding a walkie-talkie to his ear since the beginning of the trip on November 14 in order to stay in constant communication with his dad. Josh travels in two-miles increments ahead in a mini-van to make sure the way is clear. For the most part, the van is also where the two sleep and eat each day.

Stella McGee, a supporter fromWisconsin, has helped keep the official website for the fundraiser current. McGee has been calling different communities along the trail that the McClennan duo is traveling to find them donations of food and occasional lodging.
