‘Tater Traditions to be held at Potato Creek August 1

Potato Creek_signFor generations rural traditions were carried out through skills and crafts in southwest St Joseph County on what is now Potato Creek State Park.  A few of those activities will be brought back to life during ‘Tater Traditions this Saturday, August 1st.  The day begins at 10 a.m. with a tour of the Park’s historic red barn by the Park’s west boat launch.

Potato Creek State Park’s Interpretive Service and members of the Friends of Potato Creek will  conduct an afternoon of special programs from noon until 3:30 p.m. focusing on the rural lifestyle of the mid 1900’s at the Potato Creek Nature Center.  Activities will include demonstrations and various crafts.  There will be a $1 to $3 per set charge for materials for the craft programs that will include simple wooden jewelry and toys, candle dipping and making a doll from corn husks.  There will be a limited number of craft supplies available. Craft tickets may be purchased beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Nature Center.

At noon there will be a campfire cooking demonstration followed by butter making at 1:30 p.m.  Blacksmithing techniques will be demonstrated between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

No advance registration is required and the activities will be open to all.  The normal park gate fee of $7.00 for Indiana vehicles and $9.00 for out of state cars will be charged.   For more information, call the Potato Creek State Park Nature Center, 574-656-8186.
