02/14/12 Republicans gathered for the annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Monday night appreciated the words of the keynote speaker, Mike Pence. Pence is a candidate for governor of Indiana.
Pence said he and wife Karen took 13,000 signatures of those supporting him when they put his name in for his bid for the top Indiana seat. He said, “Now it’s official. I am a candidate for governor.”
However, he added that the decision to run was indeed a “heart” decision and a “head” decision. He said, “We’re grateful for the support, but it’s not about us.”
Pence said, “This is an Indiana moment.” “The cure for what ails this country will not come from Washington.”
If elected, Pence vowed to continue the fight against what he termed the avalanche of non-funded mandates and continue to work for an “even better Indiana”.
Towards the end of his speech, Pence said, “I’ve never been more confident about the future of the state.” He added, “Any time we take a stand for freedom, we don’t stand alone.”
Pence were first elected to Congress in 2000. He was elected to his sixth term in November of 2010. He represents more than 650,000 Hoosiers in 19 counties in eastern Indiana. In Congress, Pence sits on the House Judiciary Committee where he a serves as Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on the Constitution and is also a member of the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet. Additionally, he serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee where is the Vice-Chairman on the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.
Master of Ceremonies for the event was Dean Colvin. Colvin said, “Indiana is no longer the “fly over” state. It’s the “stop over” state.” Colvin said he appreciates the robust attitude of Republicans and was very excited and very encouraged that so many local Republicans attended the dinner. “We almost had the dinner on Abe Lincoln’s birthday.”
David Holmes, Marshall County Republican County Chair said, “We are really pleased to have the next governor as our speaker tonight.” Speaking of Marshall County Republicans who are office holders, Holmes said, “The reason we are here is that we elect candidates who do a good job.’
