04/17/12 Mayor Senter is pleased to announce this year’s speaker for the Annual Prayer Breakfast to be held on Thursday, May 3rd at 6:30 am at Christo’s Banquet Center. The proceeds will benefit the local Boy Scouts of America Troops and Packs. Tickets for the event will be $10 each or you can sponsor a table of 10 for $100. The speaker for this year’s breakfast is Rev. Dr. Sam Boys. Sam was born and raised in Plymouth, and has a broad spectrum of experience in ministry and teaching. He is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Ancilla College, where he teaches courses in Old and New Testament, Ethics, World Religions, Philosophy, and Religion in American Culture. As a certified yoga instructor and wellness educator at LifePlex, his current ministry emphasizes creating a balanced life – mind, body, and spirit. He is a published author, a spiritual director, and musician – an accomplished didgeridoo player – and has just released a new audio CD entitled, “Breathing Meditations and Healing Sounds.” He teaches classes and facilitates retreats at Lindenwood in Donaldson, Sacred Waters Center and Dhanwantari Center for Yoga and Well-Being in South Bend.
Ordained in 1988 in the United Church of Christ, Dr. Boys has served as the pastor of three churches, and as the campus chaplain at Bashor Children’s Home in Goshen. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree in 2002 – developing new modes of doing spiritual direction with at-risk youth. He has a passion for communicating God’s Truth through the teaching ministry and demonstrating how the human person is an embodiment of Spirit. His latest research focuses on the new emerging spirituality in the information age. With Jesus as his role-model, he seeks to honor God through word and deed – honoring the dignity of each person, cultivating authentic faith, and an abiding reverence for Life.
Dr. Boys continues to serve the Marshall County community in many ways – most recently as a member of the Board of Directors for ENCORE Performing Arts. He says, “I am proud to be a citizen of Plymouth…It’s an honor to be asked to speak at the Community Prayer Breakfast this year.” The Boys family has been a prominent part of the Plymouth community for over 100 years. He and his wife, Tammy, have five children and one granddaughter.
