The origins of Veterans Day can be traced back to November of 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced that Armistice Day would become Veterans Day, “ … in order that a grateful nation might pay homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed to the preservation of this Nation.”
Veterans Day provides the opportunity to honor these brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for their fellow Americans.
State Senator, Randy Head said, “In Indiana, the commitment to serving our nation is ingrained in our Hoosier roots. Our state has the sixth-largest National Guard and Reserve in the country.” According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are more than 475,000 veterans living in Indiana – more than 35,000 of whom are women.
Senator Head said, “May we never take our freedom – and the incredible sacrifices required to secure it – for granted. When you see a veteran, please take the time to thank them for their service.”
