Indiana’s Unemployment Rate Remaind Steady, Marshall County’s Rate Increases Slightly

August 20, 2013

08/21/13 For the Fourth month in a row Indiana’s private sector has experienced significant growth as July’s job gains totaled 5,900. The Trade, Transportation and Utilities (10,800) and Professional and Business Services (4,100) sectors far outweighed losses in the Construction (-3,400) and Manufacturing (-2,000) sectors.

The Hoosier State has now added over 203,000 private sector jobs since July 2009 and the low point of employment in Indiana has grown jobs in 40 out of the past 43 months. Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 8.4 percent in July and continues to be a stark contrast to ongoing sizable job growth.

Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate also fell for the second month in a row by 0.2 percent to 8.3 percent. April and May rate decreases signify the largest two month drop since early last year. Indiana was one of only two Midwestern states to experience a decrease in rate for the month. So far in 2013, initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits are at their lowest levels since 2000.

Marshall County’s unemployment rate grew from 8.2 to 8.3 and is the only county in the State matching the State’s rate.

Looking at counties surrounding Marshall County you’ll find Starke County at number 8 with a rate of 9.8 rating the same as St. Joe County.  Fulton County is 31st on the list with a rate of 8.5 with Elkhart County right behind at 39th also with a rate of 8.5.  Kosciusko County is 86th of the 92 counties with a rate of 6.9.      Topping the list of counties is Sullivan County with a rate of 11.0 and Hamilton county is 92nd with a rate of 5.9.

Indiana’s Employment Report for July had the largest monthly increase since February of 2012. Growth occurred at twice the national average for the month (0.4 percent vs. 0.2 percent).  Private sector employment in the Hoosier State is now at pre-recession levels not seen since July of 2008.

The Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector experience the largest one-month growth since 1990,” said Scott B. Sanders, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “Initial claims for unemployment insurance in 2013 have been at their lowest levels since 2000, the peak of employment in the Hoosier State.”
