U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly’s office reminds students interested in pursuing a nomination to one of the nation’s service academies that they must submit an application for a nomination from Senator Donnelly by Friday, September 25. Donnelly said, “I welcome interested Hoosier students to apply for a congressional nomination to a U.S. Service Academy. Our nation’s prestigious service academies provide young men and women with a top-quality college education and prepare them for successful careers as officers in the military. As one of Indiana’s U.S. Senators, it is a privilege to nominate outstanding young Hoosiers to the Armed Forces’ service academies each year.”
Each year, Donnelly has an opportunity to nominate Hoosiers for admittance to: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. Candidates are evaluated using a competitive system recommended by the academies. The selection process includes a personal interview, review of the student’s application, essays, academic records, letters of recommendation, community involvement, character, and leadership experience. A congressional nomination is not a guarantee of admission. The final decision will be made by the academy itself following a “whole-person” evaluation that takes into account a candidate’s character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals, and motivation.
